For many folks, their first introduction to the magical world of Amarone is with a bottle of Zenato’s Amarone Classico.  What follows is a frustrating quest to duplicate that experience!  There are many great Amarones – Cesari, Masi, Tommasi – but Zenato’s house style is the perfect place to start.

Their approach focuses on supremely ripe – but not over-ripe – grapes and they carefully preserve that freshness throughout the winemaking.  The result is a fabulously rich and unctuous Amarone that shows no earthy, raisiny notes.  Just the pure taste of Northern Italy’s ripest fruit flavors.

About the wine

The Zenato family crafts a creamy-textured Amarone that shows uncommon balance – so many Amarones are chunky and clumsy, but Zenato – they’re like buttah.

The 2013 vintage provided beautifully ripe fruit flavors and excellent acidity, revealing flavors of black cherry puree, blueberry, dried flowers and sweet orange with baking spice accents and a finish of caramel and date.  The tannins are harmoniously integrated, meaning you feel them as they prolong the pleasure of the flavor, but they don’t have any astringent character.

The 2013 Amarone is a blend of Corvina and Rondinella and a touch each of Croatina and Oseleta.  100% indigenous grapes with a flavor impossible to duplicate elsewhere.

The Corvina at Zenato’s Costalunga vineyard provides a uniquely intense “marasca” cherry flavor (and you should try their 100% Corvina “Cresasso” if you see it).  Rondinella provides the seductive dark color of Amarone and a floral aroma.  Oseleta is the gravelly backbone of the wine and Croatina lightens the mood with a juicy fruit personality.

All together, they combine to create a rich, saturated Amarone with lift and elegance.  It drinks remarkably well from the moment the cork is pulled, but will cellar well for 10-15 years.

'A magnificent Amarone… Tons of raisins and dried figs with scents of vanilla, cedar, toast, marzipan, caramel and dark chocolate with a bit of graphite…Sirup-like structure: Slow, dense, thick.' – Richard C.

"A beautiful & powerful Amarone!!  One of the best QPR Amarones under $60." - Rock and Roll Wino

"Rich, dense and toothsome, this classically styled Amarone boasts a broad appeal with overt aromas of baked cherry, plum preserves, wild herbs of lavender and anise and a delicious dusting of toasty baking spice. As the wine opens in the glass, all the aromatics are heightened and lovely floral components start to emerge. The texture is rich and chewy with a fresh and substantial structure. This wine will develop for the next several years and is best enjoyed with dense, aged cheese or hearty braised meats."
