This time of the year the bright and colorful vineyards of Barolo are striking. The views from the sloping Scarrone vineyard were gold and green with fall color, Scarrone’s vines are now fully picked clean of grapes. Barolo may be one of the most beautiful places on earth.

About the wine

The winery where most of Vietti’s wines are made is a stunning work of engineering. Burrowed into a hillside beneath the pretty village of Castiglione Falletto, it resembles a viticultural bunker, with several levels — a gravity-flow winery before that phrase ever became fashionable. It was built this way beginning in the 1600s, largely out of necessity given the area’s history of conflict. The rooms, tunnels and caverns create an enormous labyrinth filled with barrique barrels and oak casks. A spooky tunnel where the walls seemed to be alive. Cob-webb laden bottles from the early 1900s lay in the alcoves.

Plum and black cherry flavors are augmented by leather, underbrush and tobacco notes. Offers hints of chocolate and sweet spices, while the muscular structure keeps this under wraps. Delivers ample fruit and bright acidity, not to mention a lingering aftertaste. Turns silky and elegant with air. Best from 2023 through 2042.

This is a terrific and flexible expression of Nebbiolo that can adopt to almost any dinner party setting. The 2014 Barolo Castiglione was designed for people who want to enjoy Barolo in an easy and direct manner. This Barolo is offered at higher production numbers, although this vintage is comparatively smaller. On average they make anywhere from 44,000 to 53,000 bottles, but in 2014 only 35,000 bottles were produced. The bouquet here is generous and broad with dark fruit, spice and tar. You even get a touch of citrus or dried orange peel. The mouthfeel is a bit thinner and more delicate in this vintage. Yet the tannins leave a firm footprint and promise a good aging future ahead.

An array of berries and cherries with a floral sheen. Bright and attractive. The palate has a layer more than most, offering sour cherries and tangy, cherry-pip flavors in a supple, balanced style.
