From one of Piedmont’s most distinctive wineries, the single vineyard Barolo ‘Vigneto Garretti’ combines all the classic restraint and structure of a "gorgeous" vintage, with the elegance and openness that is characteristic of the vineyard. La Spinetta’s newest Barolo nabbed 95-points for the 2013 vintage and comes in at a stellar price. This is a serious rarity for Barolo these days, let alone a single vineyard bottling.

About the wine

La Spinetta has always been a lone wolf in the Langhe, experimenting with new and exciting techniques and blends, but the Ravetti family’s single vineyard Barbarescos were what catapulted the winery to the upper echelon in the 1990s. Like Gaja, La Spinetta has a house style that transcends their appellation, with well-recognized signatures like “textural richness” (Galloni) and “intense aromatic delivery” (Wine Advocate). With the opening of a new Barolo facility in the early 2000s, the Ravetti family have updated their winemaking in pursuit of greater classicism and reigned in the use of new oak to promote vineyard character here. The Garretti vineyard sits in the northerly Grinzane Cavour, one of Barolo’s smallest communes but with a rich history, as Italy’s first Prime Minister, Grinzane local Count Camillo Benso of Cavour, revolutionized agriculture and winemaking in Barolo.

Lots of sweet tobacco leaves, rose petals and dried-strawberry character. Full body, velvety tannins and a fruity, smoky and light earth finish. Dense and unique. Drink in 2020.

A savory, floral-scented red, this displays rose, wild thyme, juniper, eucalyptus and cherry flavors. There's fine grip, but this is balanced overall, with excellent length and a savory, spicy aftertaste.
