Piedmont is synonymous with Barolo, yet Gillardi has been producing non-Nebbiolo focused wines since 1923. The production of the winery is so small that export is practically non-existent. We are very lucky in Canada to receive a very small allocation and couldn’t be more excited to spread the news. This Syrah is not for the faint of heart. Initially your palate is met with structure and tannin and then notes of plummy black fruit and spice warm up as the wine opens up. Easily cellarable for another 10 years but with a hearty decant, this beauty will sing!
About the wine
After emigrating in 1890, Giovanni Battista fell in love with Piedmont, where the rich winemaking traditions reminded him of his native Provence. In 1923, he purchased Cascina Corsaletto, where he began growing Dolcetto with his children. Still family owned and operated, total production from Gillardi is quite small and the wines are rarely found outside of Europe.
