Wine Spectator famously said, “Beaucastel keeps going and going and going...”, and we doubt they’ll ever stop! Beaucastel’s fabled double down on flavour and intensity, mixing fresh fruit with herbs and minerality like the best French chefs. The 2017 is massively concentrated, and brings explosive aromatics of crushed black fruits and cherry liqueur in a full-bodied, classic red. Move swiftly on this one, the Francophiles are swooping in to snap up every case of this!

About the wine

An undisputed icon in the Rhône Valley, Chateau de Beaucastel sets the standard in Chateauneuf-du-Pape , and sets it high. The Perrin family generations of experience cultivating grapes in the rock-strewn vineyards of this ancient Papal hamlet, and their wines fall squarely in the “collectors dreams” category.

Situated on rocky soils that lie atop a bed of limestone, Beaucastel terroir is ideal for all 13 varieties permitted in the appellation , and which prove in this red that blended wines are far more than a sum of their parts. The 2017 Beaucastel combines cornerstone aromatics of the Mourvèdre-heavy blend including wild strawberry, cherry, and garrigue dominate the nose, which leads to an intense, full-bodied wine bursting at the seams with red fruit, minerality, and fresh herbs. Cloaked in fine-grained tannins, this Chateauneuf-du-Pape happily lives up to the family legacy.

"Without a doubt the wine of the night. Beautifully clean and super fresh. The red fruit flavors are so pure. Delicious now but the move is to wait at least 5 years on this puppy. So much potential." John C.

"Another one I’ve been waiting to try as I bought a few bottles based on vintage. 2017 seems to be a very good year for CdP and I was happy to confirm my purchase made sense - black cherry, big and warming, the vintage shines through and it’ll be super good in 3+ years. A little bricky and difficult to get past the in your face edges, but the fruit luckily does the job. This is going to stay big and focused for a decade, easily." Mats K.

"The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another sunny, beautifully Provençal effort that has a huge nose of garrigue, raw steak, leather, truffle, and peppery spice. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced, it’s not a massive Beaucastel yet it has a classic, Provençal, incredibly satisfying style that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for two decades."

"The full-bodied, dense 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape seems a bit closed at the moment, but Asian five spice powder still brings plenty of complexity and nuance to the rich, dark fruit aromas and flavors. Multidimensional, layered and long, this is another terrific vintage for Beaucastel's main cuvée, perhaps falling just slightly behind the 2016 and 2018. Rating: 93-95"

"At Beaucastel the Grenache and Cinsault are fermented in cement while the Syrah and Mourvèdre are fermented in foudre. The result features finely pixellated fruits of the forest on the nose, with a full-bodied but mightily fresh and lively palate. The Mourvèdre element is strong this year, bringing vibrancy and power. It's firmly savoury, very dry and dramatic. A very tannic year has produced a seriously structured Beaucastel for the long term."

"A dark and winey style, offering a mix of plum, black currant and black cherry notes, infused with black tea, fruitcake and anise accents. Solidly built, vibrant and energetic from start to finish, this carries copious fruit easily through the lengthy finish. Best from 2020 through 2040."
