The incredible track record of Catena can’t be understated – and Vivino users are unanimous in their approval. Every day, top ratings pour in for their wines, and Catena leads Vivino with a 4.1 rating across all wines – with a staggering 392,000 ratings! That’s more than Victoria or Saskatoon! So many purple smiles! The worldwide adoration of Catena is perfectly explained by a wine like La Consulta – big-time wine and big-time scores and no price inflation. An awesome product at a fair price. Best-in-class Malbec with incredible concentration and complexity!
The Catena Appellation series is the family’s take on the “villages” wines from France. Each wine is crafted to show the local terroir and reflect each “villages” character. Argentina shares the same Napoleonic code that France abides by. This code states land is passed down and divided among heirs of the deceased. Not only is the land kept in the family but also the traditions surrounding the winemaking and sharing of the wines made.
About the wine
The Catena Malbec Appellation Vista Flores shows a dark violet color with black reflections. The nose offers ripe, concentrated dark and red fruit aromas with delicate floral notes of lavender and violet, and mocha. The mouthfeel is rich and full with notes of sweet spice and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, well-integrated tannins with bright, crisp acidity that gives the wine exceptional length.
Family vintners for over 100 years, the Catena family is recognized for their pioneering role in high-altitude viticulture and in leading Argentina's Malbec revolution. In the 1950s, Don Domingo Catena began sourcing Malbec from the historic vineyards of Vista Flores. Domingo prized the region's Malbec for its dark colored and structured tannins.
Catena is more than wine; their story is also about family. The winery was started in 1898 by Nicola Catena after coming to Argentina from Italy. The first vines were Malbec and planted in 1902. Four generations later, Nicola’s great grand-daughter Laura is now at the helm and continuing to push Catena into revolutionizing Argentinian wines. Consistently high-rated and acknowledged by critics, Catena received Best Argentinian Winery in 2017 by Extraordinary Wine Awards presented by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Michelin Guide, as well as numerous Vivino Wine Style Awards.

90 Pts, Vinous
Appellation: Mendoza, Argentina
Cooperage: 12 months in 35% new oak, combination of French (85%) and American (15%)

Bright ruby-red. Floral, high-pitched, penetrating scents of blackberry, violet and menthol. Quite penetrating and dry on the palate; at once more medicinal and more angular than the Appellation La Consulta wine with but lovely floral lift. In the rather serious style of a northern Rhône wine and in need of another year of patience. Finishes broad and dusty, with firm tannins, strong berry fruit and little in the way of easy sweetness.

“Loved it, typical teeth and tongue-stained with that dark, inky red color.”
“Another phenomenal Malbec from Catena Zapata winery.”
