Kris, the founding winemaker at Sea Smoke, and has made wine across California, but her heart belongs to the sun-drenched Santa Barbara AVA. Together Kris and Bruno have nearly 50 years of combined winemaking experience. To date, they produce their personal wines under the Di Bruno, Curran, Badge and D'Alfonso-Curran labels.
Kris grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley. Her early love of animals led to her passion for science which, in turn, led her to receive a Pre-Vet degree at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. While working with Bruno at Sanford Winery, she became enticed by the scientific side of winemaking, drawing Kris to earn her second bachelor's degree, in Enology from Fresno State University. Kris began her career as Assistant Winemaker at Cambria Winery in the Santa Maria Valley, then moved on to Koehler Winery, in the Santa Ynez Valley, as the Winemaker and General Manager. In 2000, Kris became the founding winemaker at Sea Smoke Cellars
After founding Sea Smoke, Curran wasn’t ready to quit, and the Badge Label was born. Dark, rich, and viscous this deep red takes Rhone varietals to the max. Santa Barbara’s unique mix of coastal winds and warm California sun creates a utopia for Rhone grapes, which ripen to perfection in most years. The 2016 vintage was another golden year across California, and Badge doesn’t disappoint! Drinking beautifully now, the Badge will only get better over the next few years.
