We’ve been following Ghisolfi closely ever since they bested Barolo’s top dogs in a blind tasting. These guys are neighbors of Giacomo Conterno and Elio Grasso, and with their behemoth 2014 Bussia, they might have made the wine of the vintage! It’s impossible not to love this - a fruit and flower explosion tantalizes the senses and the taster is rewarded with a fully-featured wine with broad power and complex length. Best of all - the tannins are so integrated that you can pop the cork right now - or wait a decade. This is the highlight of Ghisolfi’s remarkable resume and is unmissable for lovers of Piedmont’s best wines. Wow!
About the wine
Bussia is a choice “Cru” or single vineyard in the storied Monforte d’Alba district. It’s undeniably one of Piedmont’s favorite sites, yielding some of the highest-scoring Italian wines in memory. The Ghisolfi label was rarely seen outside Barolo – this tiny but exceptional winery is the very definition of a well-kept local secret. Then a small importer extracted a tiny shipment to the U.S. – and word spread like wildfire. In five short years, they’ve collected 25 90+ ratings, essentially sweeping the award circuit with their confident, traditional Barolos. They’re nothing short of magnificent – they taste of rose and tar, brandied cherries and pulse with veins of iron-rich mineral. Wine critics, journalists and hard-to-please aficionados all concede: Ghisolfi is a new star. In 2014, they have leapfrogged the competition to the upper ranks – deserving to be mentioned in the company of such traditional titans as Conterno, Giacosa and Mascarello, while also appealing to lovers of Vietti, Ratti and Scavino. This prodigious young wine needs a decant and will age well for decades.

“Well balanced wild berries, oak, spices, tannins and acidity. Very long ending; the flavours remained for hours. Excellent Barolo. - Mario D.
"This 2013 is as good as I have tried from Ghisolfi. Packed with bright primary fruit now it will age beautifully. Plenty of fine firm tannin now that will mellow over the next ten years. Gets 5 stars in value for money alone." - Andrew M.
